Overcoming Fears and Phobias with Hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT

Spiders, flying, elevators, needles, heights, public speaking: almost any object or situation can become the focus of a phobia. If you live with one, you know it isn’t just “being a bit scared.” It’s a reaction that feels far bigger than the actual danger, and it can lead you to rearrange your life to avoid the trigger.

What is a phobia?

In clinical terms, a specific phobia is a type of anxiety disorder: an intense, persistent fear of a particular thing or situation, out of proportion to the real risk, that leads to avoidance or significant distress. Many people with phobias know perfectly well that their fear is “irrational,” and still can’t switch it off. That’s because the response isn’t coming from logic; it’s coming from a fast, protective part of the brain that learned, at some point, to sound the alarm.

Where do phobias come from?

Some phobias follow a frightening experience. Others develop by watching someone else’s fear, or seem to appear out of nowhere. Often there’s a mix of temperament, experience and stress. The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to know exactly where a phobia began in order to change how you respond now.

How I work with phobias

I combine several approaches, chosen to suit you:

  • Hypnotherapy. In a relaxed, focused state you can rehearse encountering the trigger while feeling calm and in control. Repeated mental rehearsal helps your nervous system learn a new response.
  • NLP. Techniques such as the fast phobia (or “rewind”) technique help change how you mentally represent the memory or trigger, for example by viewing it from a distance or replaying it differently, so it loses its emotional charge.
  • EFT (tapping). A simple technique that combines tapping on points on the face and body with focused attention on the fear. Many clients find it calming and like having a tool they can use anywhere.
  • Coaching. We plan gradual, real-world steps so the new calm response carries into daily life.

Throughout, you’re in control of the pace. We never push you into a situation you’re not ready for.

What to expect

Some specific fears ease noticeably in one or two sessions; others take longer, especially where there are several fears or a background of general anxiety. I always suggest a follow-up session to reinforce progress. Exposure-based therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, have the strongest research support for specific phobias, and my approach shares their core idea of gently and safely re-learning a response.

When to seek additional support

If your fear is part of wider anxiety, panic attacks, trauma or depression, or if it’s seriously affecting your life, please also talk to your physician or a licensed mental-health professional. I’m glad to work alongside them.

Take the first step

Living around a phobia is exhausting. Imagine being able to book that flight, visit that friend, or simply stop scanning every room. That’s a realistic goal for many people.

Hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT are complementary approaches. They don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions and are not a substitute for medical care, so please also work with your physician on any health concern.

If you’d like to find out whether this approach is a good fit for you, I offer a free, no-pressure consultation. Get in touch here and we can talk it through.
