A Short Relaxation Script: Read Yourself Into Calm

Here’s something a little different: a short relaxation script you can simply read. Find a comfortable seat, give yourself five minutes, and read slowly. Linger on the words. There’s no right or wrong way to experience it.

Before you begin

Settle into your chair, let your shoulders drop, and take one slow breath in… and a longer breath out. Then begin.

The script

As you find yourself reading these words… your eyes moving softly from word to word… you might begin to notice your breathing slowing… and your heartbeat settling into its own easy rhythm…

And I wonder how long it will be before your imagination becomes curious… Perhaps it’s the warm, creative part of your mind that leads the way… or the part that simply likes to let go and enjoy itself… Whichever it is, you know what’s best for you… and you can just allow this to continue all by itself…

Letting go of any tension you don’t need… breathing in comfort and ease… There’s nothing you need to do right now except follow these words… Every muscle, every breath, a little softer…

Somewhere inside, you might imagine a warm, peaceful place… Perhaps a color comes to mind… Let that color grow a little brighter… and notice how it seems to spread gently through your body with each breath… Notice what you can see there… the sounds that belong there… and how good it feels to be there now…

And the more you relax… the better you feel… and the better you feel… the more easily you relax…

Now imagine two parts of your mind coming together… the creative part and the part that knows how to let go… like old friends meeting again… starting to generate new ideas… new options… new and more helpful ways of thinking, feeling and responding… maybe ten… maybe a hundred… more than you need…

And every time you breathe… or blink… your mind can quietly keep creating new choices for you… continuing in the background… long after you finish reading…

In a moment, when you’re ready, take a deeper breath… feel your feet on the floor… stretch… and come back to the room feeling refreshed, calm and positive.

Afterward

Have a glass of water and notice how you feel. Many people find their breathing is slower and their thoughts are clearer. Some notice nothing much the first time, and that’s fine too; relaxation is a skill that grows with practice.

Why a script like this works

This is written in the indirect, permissive style associated with Milton Erickson. Rather than telling you what to experience, it offers choices (“perhaps… or…”) and lets your own imagination fill in the details. That makes it easier to relax without trying too hard. The “two parts coming together” image invites your mind to look for fresh options instead of replaying old patterns.

Use it safely

Only read this when you can safely relax: never while driving or operating machinery. If you’d like a personalized relaxation recording built around your own goals and imagery, that’s something we can create together in a session.
