What to Expect in Your First Hypnotherapy Session
If you’ve never been hypnotized before, it’s natural to wonder what actually happens. Hypnosis on TV and in stage shows looks nothing like a therapy session, so let me walk you through it.
Before we begin: a conversation
A good part of the first session is simply talking. I’ll ask about what you’d like to change, what you’ve tried before, and a little about your health and background. Then I’ll explain what hypnosis is and isn’t, and how we’ll use it for your goal. In my experience, people who understand the process feel more comfortable and get more out of it, so please bring every question you have.
Only when you’re ready will I guide you into hypnosis.
What hypnosis feels like
Most people describe it as deeply relaxing, a bit like the moment just before you drift off to sleep, or being absorbed in a good book. You’re aware of where you are and you can hear me. You can move, speak, or open your eyes at any time. Some people feel heavy and warm, others light; some remember everything, others drift a little. All of these are normal.
During this part of the session we work on your goal using suggestion, imagery and, where helpful, NLP or Time Line techniques.
Afterward
When you come out of hypnosis we spend a few minutes talking about your experience. I’ll often give you a simple self-hypnosis or tapping exercise to practice at home, because what you do between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on you and on the goal. As a rough guide:
- Some focused issues, such as a specific fear, may shift noticeably in one or two sessions, though I always recommend a follow-up to reinforce the change.
- Many goals take somewhere between three and six sessions.
- Deeper or more complex patterns may benefit from a longer plan, sometimes alongside other professional support.
I usually suggest spacing sessions about a week apart so you have time to notice changes and practice.
A plan built around you
My approach is client-centered: we agree on your goals and plan together, and we review progress as we go. You’re never locked into a fixed package, and if I think another kind of help would serve you better, I’ll tell you.
A few practical tips
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Avoid a heavy meal or a lot of caffeine just before.
- Let me know about any medical or mental-health conditions and medications.
- Come with curiosity rather than pressure; you can’t “fail” at hypnosis.
Hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT are complementary approaches. They don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions and are not a substitute for medical care, so please also work with your physician on any health concern.
If you’d like to find out whether this approach is a good fit for you, I offer a free, no-pressure consultation. Get in touch here and we can talk it through.
